syrup city cowboys.

in firmly believing that you always have great bands right in your own backyard, i've been indulging in texas sounds like no other ever since i've returned home. Wicked Poseur are two houston dudes creating a hodgepodge of post punk, garage & a good dose of the teenagers-esque electo tunes then cramming it into an awesome package for our listening pleasure.

they also managed to get the room's own Tommy Wiseau to lip synch in their video they put out last fall. and he turns into a werewolf. i'm not kidding. you can catch that HERE.

psychotic reaction.

ComScore
last november i went to go check out austin's own, Gauche, at one of the fabulous parties Frock On Vintage throws every now & then. my mother was in town visiting & being her up for anything self i took her along to the show. with a band that describes themselves as 'beach high weirdos playing stomp around rock n roll', it's no wonder this radical quartet had her shaking her stuff in no time.

if you happen to be in town for sxsw then be sure to catch them again thursday march 15th / 3 pm @ Frock On Vintage.

aye please.

scotland has really been tugging on my shirt as of late, probably it's forces trying to get me to come back as soon as possible. so when i do go back, i've decided i'd definitely spend a bit more time in glasgow - then i'd be sure to catch glazed donut loving band, Schnapps. if you're in the mood for a little fuzzy garage pop tinged with a bit of dirty sex then i suggest you give their brilliantly titled album, nasty buffet, a go. the lead singer also happens to be the king of haggis over at El Rancho Records.

we'll go unseen.

very sad news that Christopher Reimer, guitarist for one of my favorite bands ,Women, died in his sleep yesterday. he was only 26.

in a small way, i hope this ends their silly hiatus as they're a great fucking band.

slipshod drunkard.

i cannot seem to get enough of reno/amsterdam based label Slovenly Recordings. putting aside the fact that they released two of my favorite albums last year from Acid Baby Jesus & J.C. SATÀN, they're also home to great bands such as Los Vigilantes, The Spits & Thee Oops.

however recently i've really been diggin two ep's set to be released this march. one from grungy charlotte, north carolina trio, Paint Fumes. the other from athens, greece homeboys Bazooka, who are a four piece containing two drummers (one of them being john vulgaris who produced the acid baby jesus album!) both of these bands show why they (along with slovenly) are keeping garage punk alive & well. seriously, don't sleep on either one of them. i'm enjoying these with my morning coffee so loud that i know my banjo playing neighbor is going to stomp the floor soon.

and as a special treat, if you're looking to get even dirtier, then check out what some of members of Bazooka are also getting into: Gay Anniversary.

the word hurricane.

if you're into scuzz/garage/lo-fi/surf rock/post-punk, etc then i HIGHLY suggest coming to melbourne. seriously. there are so many fucking good bands coming out of here at the moment it's insane. so if you can't make it here, then at least start paying attention.

tonight i went to check out sydney's Step-Panther at the gasometer. while it's obvious that people at venues here know what they're doing when it comes to sound, this band did everything they could to ensure they helped keep it LOUD. they had a total 70's stoner rock vibe going on but it was almost as if they channeled a little bit of a mellow sex pistols during their set. a winning band in my book. (not to mention, they let me know where to score the cheap tecate!)

however, i have to say that the real show stealers here were melbourne duo Ross De Chene Hurricanes. they were a heavy mixture of no age & ty segall yet kept it fresh with a sound all their own. consisting of only a guitar, drums & the occasional tambourine on a cymbal - these guys affirm my belief that bands here are much better live then on recording. so if you live in melbs, then get to whatever dirty bar they're playing at next.
