so when i found out this hot little brooklyn trio, monogold had rented out my studio for sxsw i just had to see what all the fuss was about. what i found was lush, harmonic vocals with a swirling good time of pianos & hazy guitars for good measure. thanks to ole' faithful bandcamp you can snag their debut album, the softest glow for a mere $10.

if you'll be in austin next week they have three shows booked, which i personally think the best will be the BirdDog Promo Showcase @ Tito's House. makes me wonder which one of these sexy guys is going to be sleeping in my bed!

this week i've been soaking up the r&b infused sounds from portland's unknown mortal orchestra. apparently ruban nielson, of the mint chick's fame, is the brains behind this project & while they tend to go down the noise pop road UMO's road is paved with a little more jamie lidell/tobacco.

well this really melts my butter.

now if anyone could make my heart stop by covering 'agoraphobia' this would be the band. while this whole little session is fantastic, skip to the 9:50 mark to get to the goods.

now this is how you get a damn album released:

blow your deadline & ignore the numerous emails/text messages sent from your record label with pleas to finish an album. then out of nowhere send them a large brown box with the words "SHINJU TNT" scrawled across the bottom of it in black magic marker & the only return address being "AK, Detroit." then inside the box you put toy astronauts/dinosaurs, three pictures, a tracklist written in crayon & four blown out song fragments on a TDK CDR in a ziplock bag. a post-it on the bag declares that you refuse to send the full album to anyone but the vinyl pressing plant.

despite the numerous leaked versions of it on the internet as of late, akron/family's "S/T II:The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT" will be out february 8th on dead oceans.

this must be what heaven looks like.

i had the pleasure of hosting a lovely aussie at my apartment a few months back who upon departing left behind some cd's of his for my listening enjoyment. one was of his solo work under the paper boat & one of of his band no-way sweden, both of which were released on the brilliant concept project 500 Dollar Limit.

i seriously wish i could create a "nofussmuss" music genre cause this is what i would tuck this under. nothing over the top or out of control, just blissful songs that make you feel....well.... blissful.

guys like this are what musical soulmates are made out of.
