lost in yonkers.

tyler the creator - yonkers

you have to take notice when someone screams: stab bruno mars in his goddamn esophagus and won't stop until the cops come in.

besides having one of the best covers yet, tyler the creator's second album 'goblin' is shaping up to definitely be on my top 10 albums of the year. it's like this 20 year old kid has been smoking too much pcp while watching tales from the hood on repeat.

banshee beat.

Demdike Stare - Hashshashin Chant

this past weekend i went to visit a good friend of mine who also happens to be one of my favorite people in the world to discuss music with. so, it didn't surprise me one bit when i'm standing in the middle of his kitchen & he insists i watch this 6 minute video of wtf'ness from british duo Demdike Stare. only a musical act aptly named after a 17th-century witch would put out something this amazingly haunting. i don't even know what to do with myself after seeing this but....

i.cannot.stop.watching.

dientes de perro.

with all of the screeching, spanish punk that portland, oregon's Magic Johnson is putting out, who needs to pay attention to any basketball finals going on?

you can dl their ep for a whopping $3 HERE. and i must say that 'landlord song' kind of grabs you by the cojones for a full 1:31 minutes.

super psyched.

just now coming down after soaking up 3 days of scuzzy bands at austin psych fest. black moth super rainbow, atlas sound, crystal stilts, crocodiles, a place to bury strangers, prefuse 73 - the amazing list just didn't stop & all put on stellar sets. however, there were 2 acts i was very interested in seeing & surprisingly, they ended up being the best ones.

Bass Drum Of Death - Spare Room

Bass Drum Of Death - Nerve Jamming

mississippi's bass drum of death was by far the best performance of the festival. if their debut album cover tells you anything it means they came to party. it's a thrashing good time of garage drenched tunes which when played live, easily surpasses their recordings. besides, anytime a hot model-type girl gets topless at one of your shows, you know you're doing something right.

Dirty Beaches - Lord Knows Best

Dirty Beaches - Sweet 17

canada's alex zhang hungtai, better known as dirty beaches is a psychobilly dreamboat. his debut album, badlands, sounds like what a modern day eddie cochran would put out if he holed up & listened to the black angels 24/7. with lines like "lord knows best that i don’t give a damn about anyone but you", it pulls on your heartstrings a bit. placed against a cool, grey, sunday afternoon his performance was a nice calm to a crazy weekend & might i add very, very sexy.

raise your jazz hands.

The Sea & Cake - Up On The North Shore

i almost forgot to blog about my favorite chicago darlings (and one of the best bands to makeout to) the sea & cake. their 9th album, which is only 6 tracks long, is being relased may 30th & by the sound of the first single - it brings that warm, soothing sound they've been giving us for the past 17 years.

the last days of disco.

Maria Minerva - A Little Lonley

a little droned out electro/disco beat doesn't sound like it would mesh with an estonian chick declaring how she'll never find love because she's too fat & ugly. maria minerva is neither of the two she claims to be but somehow manages to make it all work. this is the kind of track you put on your best sequin outfit for & dance the night away.

you can count on me.

Panda Bear - Tomboy (Live at Primavera Sound)

noah lennox is back & it sounds like he had a brush with the dark side. i'm loving every bit of this new album. tomboy comes out next tuesday but npr is letting you stream the entire thing HERE.

great danes.

Iceage - New Brigade

i guess when you're a group of 17 year old danish punk dudes you can make a music video in kkk hoods, smoke out of bongs, crash shopping carts, & sword fight with pocket knives. all these shenanigans courtesy of copenhagen's iceage.

stay gold ponyboy.

Monogold - Ivory Teeth Golden Tusk

Monogold - Spirt Or Something

so when i found out this hot little brooklyn trio, monogold had rented out my studio for sxsw i just had to see what all the fuss was about. what i found was lush, harmonic vocals with a swirling good time of pianos & hazy guitars for good measure. thanks to ole' faithful bandcamp you can snag their debut album, the softest glow for a mere $10.

if you'll be in austin next week they have three shows booked, which i personally think the best will be the BirdDog Promo Showcase @ Tito's House. makes me wonder which one of these sexy guys is going to be sleeping in my bed!

the golden arches.

Arches - Headlights

words cannot even explain how enamored i am with this new album from philly's own arches. it's a simplistic slice of psychedelic pie that just begs for you to fall in love. you can stream the entire album on their bandcamp HERE.

i've been stuck on this like elizabeth taylor to husbands for the past week & imagine my surprise when the guys posted a julian lynch cover to their tumblr today. as if they weren't cool enough already......

saturday morning fever.

Honeydrum - Saturday Morning

if a monotone indian drum circle with a splash of lo-fi is something you'd be interested in then you're going to love new jersey's honeydrum. and this is another band that's keepin' it real with the $5 cassette tapes!

fucked up friends.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Ffunny Frends

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Thought Ballune

this week i've been soaking up the r&b infused sounds from portland's unknown mortal orchestra. apparently ruban nielson, of the mint chick's fame, is the brains behind this project & while they tend to go down the noise pop road UMO's road is paved with a little more jamie lidell/tobacco.

Monday, February 21, 2011

well this really melts my butter.

now if anyone could make my heart stop by covering 'agoraphobia' this would be the band. while this whole little session is fantastic, skip to the 9:50 mark to get to the goods.

insane in the membrane.

Brain Idea - Days Blown Away

Brain Idea - One More Time

anyone who knows me knows i love my scuzzy, low fidelity tunes. this time it comes courtesy of chicago trio brain idea with tracks from their debut album, the survival scrolls.

so go ahead...get all rob gordon on it.
