the past few weeks i haven't been able to get enough of the new album from Hozac Records solo darling Nice Face . released last month, Horizon Fires, is a garage surf pop creation with upbeat sounds sending us straight into summer. sample the wears above for an overall good time.

little rock's a fine town.

 oxford, mississippi's ILLLS join a growing list of awesome bands being spawned from down south such as bass drum of death, dead gaze & dent may.

above you'll see the vomit inducing sludge video for their first single "teeth", off their ep - Dark Paradise - being released next week. seems like there might be a bit of influence from fellow southern garage rocker, jay reatard - which is cool if this is the way the south is going to rise again.

already being one of my favorite music labels, Slovenly Recordings does it once again by giving us their next new scuzzy gem: Sultan Bathery.

 formed only a few months ago, this band of "italian garage weirdos", as described by SR's label manager, hail all the way from venzia, italy. with the surge of great noisy bands coming out of europe right now, i'm definitely going to keep my eye on that side of that pond for awesome sounds like this.

 here we go! Animal Collective finally released the news that their releasing a follow up to 2009's merriweather post pavillion come this september with 'centipede hz'. seems like MMP was a bit on the poppy side, maybe all the dudes getting settled into married life/having babies & what not. but now that deakin's back in the group it sounds like their getting back to their experimental noise roots - which you know i love.

 take a listen to the pre-stuff they're throwing at us "honeycomb' & "gotham" which will be released on a 7" from Domino Records on june 26th.

psychedelic cowgirl

i've totally been entranced by the new hazy track from city of angels guru, Julia Holter - which is a an ethereal take on Jib Kidder's "ringtone cowboy". i'll go ahead & say that a full collaborative album between these two would be heaven in the making for me. channeling a bit of marissa nadler/hope sandoval, this is something lee hazlewood probably would have had on repeat all day too.

just in time for these amazing spring days comes the sugar coated pop jangles from Vacations, also known as the frontman for cleburne, texas scuzzsters Fungi Girls. long gone are the heavily distorted vocals & here replaced with pristine soothing sounds - enough to woo the socks off any teen dream.

while we patiently wait for a debut release (and if you're in the Fort Worth area) you can catch FG this Saturday at Doc's Record Store Party. Dudes go on at 6 pm.

for the past few weeks i've been a little obsessed with the new ep, Hot Babes Cool Surf, from brooklyn via vermont duo, Hot Babes. clocking in just shy of 12 minutes, it's been the ray of sunshine in my humdrum world of new music being released. if you're in the mood for a bit of lo-fi garage trash then you'll be shakin' your stuff this in no time.

i love the dudes over at Underwater Peoples. from having a cool website i always enjoy reading, to putting out awesome mixes to releasing amazing albums from some of the best lo-fi/folk/beach buzz bands around - they are a record label that kicks ass on all kinds of levels.

their latest venture swirls around portland's The Memories. this track, from their soon to be released self titled record, is a woozy jam dedicated to that sweet girl that rattles you when you got your right head on. so sit back with your means of relaxation & prepare to have your heart melted.

horse disco!

life has been going on folks! getting used to a new job, spending time with genuinely cool people & getting over an insane SXSW. speaking of, best show by far was the hardly art showcase with shimmering stars, xray eyeballs (who set the fire alarm off multiple times), k-holes & jacuzzi boys (who somehow managed to place me in a mosh pit a few times. i'm still recovering.)

however one band i'm really bummed i missed was alberta, canada based psych poppers, The Ketamines. just released last month, their first full length, Spaced Out, is a killer blend of surf, garage, soul and i do declare a touch of rick springfield influence at the very end. you know you can't fuck with that.

plus, i respect any band who would list miles davis, the spits, wax idols & white fence as some of their top jams in the tour van.

hip hop honey.

my best friend likes to tell me i enjoy listening to noise. sometimes, it's not always true. i'm really diggin' this just released video for a right to create music's own Kipp Stone. this track is just one of the 27 songs he put out on a trilogy release with label mate, and sometimes rocker, Thaddeus Greene.

i also think it's fitting that being from cleveland, he's wearing a university of leeds hoodie. especially since i was just there for a night last september, with the same best friend & ended up taking pictures lying down in the street. yeah.

it's very sunny.

imagine if the beach boys & pulp took a bunch of lo-fi soaked lsd in a fluffy room then decided to have a jam session. if you can imagine that, then you can imagine what san diego's Heavy Hawaii sounds like. they just released their slightly odd video for "Super Bowl XXIX", a 3 song 7" released this past january via the awesome Art Fag Recordings.

basically, this is the stuff you sway your pantless hips to. oh so good.

syrup city cowboys.

in firmly believing that you always have great bands right in your own backyard, i've been indulging in texas sounds like no other ever since i've returned home. Wicked Poseur are two houston dudes creating a hodgepodge of post punk, garage & a good dose of the teenagers-esque electo tunes then cramming it into an awesome package for our listening pleasure.

they also managed to get the room's own Tommy Wiseau to lip synch in their video they put out last fall. and he turns into a werewolf. i'm not kidding. you can catch that HERE.

psychotic reaction.

last november i went to go check out austin's own, Gauche, at one of the fabulous parties Frock On Vintage throws every now & then. my mother was in town visiting & being her up for anything self i took her along to the show. with a band that describes themselves as 'beach high weirdos playing stomp around rock n roll', it's no wonder this radical quartet had her shaking her stuff in no time.
