the devil walks among us.

my hopes of canada's Women getting back together may be a distant memory, but from the painful ashes of their demise rises former lead singer patrick flegel's new project Cindy Lee. born just this past halloween 2012 & their debut album (which i somehow missed) released a few months later in december, their track 'holding the devils hand' gives us that eerie feeling of something special that once was. patrick's screeching croons still pull on my heartstrings & gives new hope that something really cool is now upon us.

skater krout?!

so i haven't been updating the blog because i've been going through a real lull with new music. all the new tracks i keep listening to seem to suck & i don't want to bag on anyone's game so i just went back to listening to old stuff.

today however, i caught the new track from Lexington, ky's Jovontaes for their upcoming second album 'paranoia makes a crazy gift'. no damn lyrics needed - just straight weird, dark, psychedelic dance, drumming in your face, crazy goodness. watch the video with the lights turns off & the sound up LOUD, i promise you won't be disappointed. album out june 4th via sophomore lounge records.

everybody's free to feel good.

i've totally been diggin' on this tripped out single from canada's Absolutely Free.  what starts off like a psychedelic zappa dream, ends in something like fugazi drizzled all over a broadcast record. sooooo good!

if you're in austin for sxsw - be sure to check them saturday march 16th @ valhalla on red river.

freaks come out at night.

hi there! long time no see. but i figure if i'm going to pop in with something, it was going to be with something good.

our little texas scuzzsters Fungi Girls are at it again with a cover of  "freakquency" - originally crooned by dallas hip hop bros A.Dd+.  from the ripened vocals of frontman jacob bruce to the flawless production from Dreamysoundz mastermind jennifer rux, this track is really, really in your face, damn good garage.

go buy these dudes a beer by visiting their bandcamp.

the coast of utopia.

late last year i posted about Skeleton Coast & how they seemed to be making quite the buzz around town. and now they've FINALLY released the first taste off of their upcoming debut album - an amazing track called "Rupees".

at first i was like, wait does this sound like animal collective? or does it sound more like tame impala? do i hear faint hints of yuck or ariel pink in there? but no, this sounds like fucking skeleton coast.

i can't even begin to tell you how i've already grown a bit obsessed with this song or that it continues to amaze me that sounds like these are coming out of fort worth, texas. when i tell you my hometown is bringing it - BELIEVE IT.

i've recently been asked by a few people how i got into garage. being introduced to music at such a young age i really have to hand it over to my mom & dad for being the inspiration. i remember taking numerous road trips as a kid and there was ALWAYS music playing in the background. they played an array of great stuff ranging from 50/60's rock, surf, doo-wop to classic motown - but - i always took a special liking when i heard something noisy blaring from the speakers.

so in ode to them, i've collected some garage tracks that i've held in high regards growing up over the years. a majority of these tracks were released during the 60's, as a matter of fact i don't think anything on here was released passed 1970. i'd also like to point out that there are some killer texas bands in here too - including the nomads from my hometown of ft. worth!

the end of the sea.

paul from Polyvinyl Craftsmen (which is a killer blog by the way & currently has me addicted to their mixes) was nice enough to send me some sounds from uprising uk band Wobbly Lamps.

the following tracks are from their debut ep, Neon Tee Pee, which is concoction of upbeat rock tinged with a bit of loud garage. upon listening, this heavily channeled the cramps ala bad music for bad people & if you know that album then you'll probably get a feeling this ep is gonna be a good one. and get it while it's hot - currently this is limited to not so many releases!

thunder from down under.

apparently melbourne, aus is still bringing it in the pop noise punk department. the dudes in Rayon Moon recently hipped me to the guys in Sandcastle. this little quartet, formed in late 2011, released an amazing ep back in april & while only 3 tracks long - it's really fucking killer.

seriously get on top of this, especially if you've been riding the white fence train. this ep is a clean cut blend of post punk greatness & i can't wait to hear more from these guys. makes me wish i was back in melbs to see them live!

chicas bonitas.

i started listening to barcelona, spain's,  Mujeres, back when i was in scotland & needed a little sunshine in my life. their most recent album, well if you consider recent something that was released back in march, is chopped full of surf jangles with a heavy dose of that garage you know i love so much - proof that the european scuzz invasion continues! (if you're a fan of the black lips, you're seriously going to dig this.)

check out the awesome video for their killer opening track, soft gems pt. 1:  HERE!

dazed & confused.

the past few weeks i haven't been able to get enough of the new album from Hozac Records solo darling Nice Face . released last month, Horizon Fires, is a garage surf pop creation with upbeat sounds sending us straight into summer. sample the wears above for an overall good time.

little rock's a fine town.

oxford, mississippi's ILLLS join a growing list of awesome bands being spawned from down south such as bass drum of death, dead gaze & dent may.

above you'll see the vomit inducing sludge video for their first single "teeth", off their ep - Dark Paradise - being released next week. seems like there might be a bit of influence from fellow southern garage rocker, jay reatard - which is cool if this is the way the south is going to rise again.

the diamond sea.

already being one of my favorite music labels, Slovenly Recordings does it once again by giving us their next new scuzzy gem: Sultan Bathery.

formed only a few months ago, this band of "italian garage weirdos", as described by SR's label manager, hail all the way from venzia, italy. with the surge of great noisy bands coming out of europe right now, i'm definitely going to keep my eye on that side of that pond for awesome sounds like this.

i warned him that i like it noisy. so consider yourself warned too.

party animals.

here we go! Animal Collective finally released the news that their releasing a follow up to 2009's merriweather post pavillion come this september with 'centipede hz'. seems like MMP was a bit on the poppy side, maybe all the dudes getting settled into married life/having babies & what not. but now that deakin's back in the group it sounds like their getting back to their experimental noise roots - which you know i love.

take a listen to the pre-stuff they're throwing at us "honeycomb' & "gotham" which will be released on a 7" from Domino Records on june 26th.
